We organise a series of duathlons over the summer on the traffic-free circuit at Westpoint near Exeter, as well as providing an opportunity for time-trialling. These provide an excellent opportunity to experience racing, practice technique and get used to that "running off the bike" feeling that many multisport athletes dread, all in a safe environment. They also allow the competitive amongst us to indulge in a bit of friendly rivalry!
Parking at the Driver Training Centre: First right after passing through the entry gates then park alongside the railings, or in the car park further up the road behind the buildings on the right.
Registration at the start on the driver training circuit (left side after passing through the entry gates).
- The races will start at or just after 6:30pm.
- The distances for run + bike + run are:
- Seniors: 3 + 12 + 1.5 laps (2.4 + 9.6 + 1.2 Km) which is the same as last year.
- Juniors: 2 + 8 + 1 laps (1.6 + 6.4 + 0.8 Km).
Older juniors may compete with the seniors if they prefer.
- You should be prepared to count your own laps but don't underestimate how hard it can be to keep track of them mentally. A bike computer works well for the ride since laps are almost exactly 800m/0.5m.
- You will wear timing chips on your wrist which should be placed against the reader (like a door security system) upon entering and exiting transition, and at the finish. There will be a manual backup for overall time.
- Run and ride on the left, running clockwise (outside lane) and riding anti-clockwise (inside lane), and never crossing the centreline except as required to enter or exit transition.
- Chip in and out of transition, plus at the finish (you will receive a 20s time penalty for each missed time).
- Dismount before crossing the line into transition; do not mount until crossing the line out of transition.
- Be aware of other competitors crossing your path near transition (bikes always have right of way over runners).
- Bike etiquette: Helmets must be worn; drafting is discouraged but inadvertent infringements will not be penalised; try to give verbal warning of your intention to overtake.
- Above all, be sensible, show courtesy to other competitors/helpers, and enjoy yourself!
- Place your bike on the grass to either side of the transition area, between the timing line and the near turning cone.
- You will run the complete distance through transition twice, the same total distance with the bike regardless of where you place it.
Run 1: 2 or 3 laps clockwise red
- Run on the lefthand side from the start line, through the cone triangle and turn right onto the outside of the circuit.
- Run the laps, keeping to the left of all four cones on the main circuit.
- At the end of the last lap, turn right through the cone triangle, keeping to the left of the two righthand cones, and being being aware of oncoming bikes going anticlockwise round the main circuit.
Transition 1: clockwise purple
- Chip in at the timing line.
- Run up the west side of the transition area, round the near turning cone and back down the east side, collecting yor bike from wherever you left it.
- Chip out at the timing line and mount your bike.
Bike: 8 or 12 laps anticlockwise blue
- Turn left and ride the laps, always keeping to the left of the road centreline.
- Be aware of runners crossing into transition at the end of each lap.
- At the end of the last lap, turn left towards transition.
Transition 2: clockwise purple
- Dismount your bike before the timing line, and chip in.
- Run up the west side of transition area, round the near turning cone and back down the east side, dropping your bike where you originally left it.
- Chip out at the timing line.
Run 2: 1 or 1+ laps clockwise green
- Turn right through the cone triangle, keeping to the left of the two righthand cones, and being aware of bikes coming from your right on the main circuit.
- Run one full lap.
- At the end of the lap, turn right through the cone triangle, keeping to left of the two righthand cones, and being aware of oncoming bikes going anticlockwise round the main circuit.
- Juniors: Finish by chipping in on the timing line.
- Seniors: Run up the west side through transition, round the far turning cone at the top of the road, back down the east side and finish by chipping in on the timing line.
